The History of Yamaha® Powersports Vehicles


Yamaha is one of the biggest and most important names in the powersports industry. The company has spent the past several decades iterating and improving upon its designs. Early Years

Even if you’re not big into powersports vehicles, you may be familiar with the Yamaha name, especially if you are a musician. That is because Yamaha’s parent company, the Yamaha  Corporation, is currently the world’s biggest manufacturer of musical instruments. After World War II, many of the Yamaha Corporation’s manufacturing facilities were being underutilized. To fix this, the company started developing its own line of motorcycles during the 1950s. This culminated in 1955 when the motorcycle division was split off into its own independent company, the Yamaha Motor Company. Even though it did not produce musical instruments, the Yamaha Motor Company chose to honor its history by using a variation of the Yamaha logo, which is meant to depict three interlocking tuning forks. 

 

1960s Era

Like many powersports manufacturers during this era, the Yamaha Motor Company was heavily involved in the racing scene both domestically and internationally. The company’s victory in the 1963 Belgian GP race led to the development of Yamaha’s first international subsidiaries. Another innovation came in 1968, when the company introduced its first four-stroke engine. 

 

1980s Expansion

The 1980s were a time of expansion for Yamaha. The motorcycle industry started to shift from producing basic but versatile models to more specialized bikes that fit particular niches, a trend that Yamaha was more than ready to meet. The company also expanded into producing other types of powersports vehicles like ATVs and PWCs. 

 

Today

Today, Yamaha continues to produce some of the most reliable powersports vehicles on the market, including motorcycles, ATVs, and UTVs. Even after more than sixty years, the company shows no signs of slowing down.
